In de jaren hierna dreef Montagnier steeds verder af van de wetenschappelijke mainstream. Zo begon hij onderzoek te doen naar elektromagnetische straling die volgens hem werd uitgezonden door dna. Hij stelde dat mensen met een sterk immuunsysteem binnen een paar weken van hiv af konden zijn en dat goede voeding de infectie kon voorkomen. Ook opperde hij dat langdurig antibioticagebruik soelaas zou kunnen bieden tegen autisme en keerde hij zich tegen kindervaccinaties omdat die wiegendood zouden veroorzaken. Stuk voor stuk maatschappelijke onderwerpen die een kritische blik verdienen, maar niet gebaat zijn bij ongefundeerde beweringen van een persoon met gezag.

In coronatijd poneerde Montagnier regelmatig slecht onderbouwde, politiek incorrecte stellingen, zoals dat de vaccinaties de oorzaak zijn van het ontstaan van nieuwe virusvarianten en dat vaccinaties juist leiden tot meer doden doordat de antistoffen averechts werken. Hij koesterde de heldenrol die anticorona-activisten hem toedichtten.

Luc Montagnier (1932 - 2022), de medeontdekker van hiv, dreef af van de wetenschap

De Franse viroloog die in de jaren tachtig beroemd werd als medeontdekker van hiv dreef in zijn latere jaren steeds verder af van de wetenschap. Maar de waardering voor Luc Montagniers bijdrage aan de aidsbestrijding blijft.
