Journalist Mohammed Haniya:

What does a cold winter night in a tent mean?

- It means your tent turns into an icy freezer; the mere act of pulling your hand out from under the blanket leaves it so cold it’s nearly frozen. You reach out to touch the children’s faces around you, only to find them icy cold.
- The idea of taking your child to the bathroom is “terrifying.” How can they leave the warmth of the bed to step out into a separate bathroom, facing even harsher cold and biting wind in the rainy nighttime distance?
- Most people will wake up to the sound of heavy rain, its pounding on the tent ringing in their ears. The fear of rain seeping in is a constant worry, enough to wipe any trace of sleep from your mind.
- Gusts of wind occasionally strengthen, making the tent sway and dance, while you hold your breath, fearing the stakes might come loose.
- In short, it means sleeplessness, for you are neither reassured nor warm, and you lack any means to change your situation. All that remains is patience.
