I took this photo of Shujaiya, Gaza exactly 10 years ago today, which is also the one year anniversary of the murder of Palestinian professor, intellectual and writer Refaat Alareer, who was from Shujaiya.
As this photo shows, large swaths of Shujaiya were destroyed in the 2014 Israeli assault and had not been rebuilt due to the siege.
Nonetheless, its people remained steadfast. Amid the rubble scape, I met families who suffered unspeakable horrors, yet refused to abandon what was left of their homes.
Today, Shujaiya is in even worse condition, and the brilliant teacher of life Refaat is no longer with us.
However, his memory is stronger than ever, carried on by those who were fortunate enough to know and learn from him, and by those who learn of him through his writings and interviews.
No amount of death and destruction can erase the memory of Refaat Alareer, who embodied the quiet bravery of Shujaiya and Gaza’s unquenchable thirst for freedom.
May we all carry his legacy forward.
