“Now they have come to take me.”
Currently, at a demonstration for the families of Israeli prisoners in Tel Aviv, a person is lying on the ground, dressed in blood-stained clothes, holding a sign that reads:
“At first, they came to take the Arabs – and I did not raise my voice, because I am not an Arab. Then they came and took the non-Jewish children – and I did not raise my voice, because I am not a non-Jewish child. Then they came to take the leftists – and I did not raise my voice, because I am not a leftist. Finally, they came to take me – and there was no one left to speak on my behalf.”
The quote is inspired by a famous statement by German pastor Martin Niemöller, who opposed the Nazis and wrote a similar reflection about them.
