Het was kort na de afgetekende verkiezingszege van Donald Trump in de VS de grote vrees van experts: met de Republikein in het Witte Huis zou de situatie in Gaza nóg slechter kunnen worden dan hij al was. Maar vier dagen voordat Trump aan zijn tweede termijn begint, ligt er een akkoord over een staakt-het-vuren op tafel. De vingerafdrukken van de aanstaande president zijn onmiskenbaar aanwezig.

Ruim een half jaar later bleek Trumps uitverkiezing het laatste zetje om na vijftien maanden oorlog de verschillen alsnog te overbruggen.

'Meer bereikt dan Biden in jaar'​

Trump zette vorige week extra druk op de onderhandelingen door te zeggen dat de "hel losbreekt" als de gijzelaars niet vrij zijn voor zijn inauguratie, zonder daarbij duidelijk te maken wat hij precies bedoelde. Zaterdag bracht vervolgens Steve Witkoff, die komende week aantreedt als speciaal Midden-Oosten-gezant voor Trump, een bezoek aan Netanyahu.
De Israëlische krant Haaretz schreef dat Witkoff aan Netanyahu had laten weten zaterdag overdag te willen langskomen. Toen hij te horen kreeg dat dit midden op de joodse rustdag sabbat viel en dat hij pas 's avonds welkom was, kreeg Netanyahu volgens Haaretz kraakhelder te horen dat de sabbat even op het tweede plan kwam.
De premier ging daarop alsnog naar kantoor. Het illustreert de andere wind die er waait vanuit de VS. The Times of Israël stelt op basis van Arabische bronnen rond de onderhandelingen in Qatar dat Witkoff in de "gespannen" ontmoeting meer voor elkaar kreeg bij Netanyahu dan Biden in een jaar tijd. Vier dagen later werd het akkoord gesloten.

Hamas always said October 7 was about a hostage exchange

Today, the Head of Hamas Martyrs and Prisoners Office, Zaher Jabarin, made the following statement regarding the hostages exchange and ceasefire:

"Through the gracious efforts of mediators, the obstacles that arose due to the occupation’s non-compliance with the terms of the ceasefire agreement were resolved early this morning.

The movement has worked towards a national prisoner exchange involving all factions and members of our people.

We affirm that the lists of our freed prisoners in the first phase of the exchange deal under the ceasefire agreement will be published through the Prisoners’ Office in accordance with the stages and procedures of the exchange.

We renew our salute to our people in the Gaza Strip, whose steadfastness, after Allah, was the primary reason for completing this deal. May Allah have mercy on the martyrs of our people, grant healing to the wounded, and bless our people with freedom and liberation."

Netanyahu ligt zwaar onder vuur bij de Israelische pers! Hem wordt verweten dat hij structureel akkoorden heeft gesaboteerd en dat dit onnodige slachtoffers heeft geeist onder Israelische gijzelaars. Zelfs als men in Israel zich uitsluitend bekommert om de eigen slachtoffers pakt dit slecht uit voor Netanyahu, omdat hij gijzelaars heeft opgeofferd voor zijn eigen agenda. De smoes dat Hamas structureel akkoorden blokkeerde gaat niet meer op, iedereen ziet nu dat het Netantayu was. We maken het begin van het einde van Netanyahu mee.

⚠️ Why Saturday?

Why did Al Jazeera choose Saturday night, just before the implementation of the ceasefire, to air this episode? Is the goal to achieve the highest level of engagement before Gaza opens up to the world and attention is divided between covering the return of displaced persons, prisoner exchanges, scenes of destruction, the search for the bodies of martyrs, and the terrifying stories that have yet to be told?

Choosing this particular night may appear provocative to the Israeli public, potentially prompting widespread discussion about the episode. This, in turn, could lead to new Israeli escalations in Gaza to appease their audience. These are merely possibilities, but they are extremely costly possibilities, paid for with the blood of Gaza’s people.

Let me be clear: everything that happens after this episode airs will be the responsibility of Al Jazeera, and no one will spare them from accountability. This is a selfish act—indeed, the height of selfishness—to prioritize engagement over the blood of Gaza’s people.

Since last night, everyone without exception has been demanding that the episode be postponed, but Al Jazeera has so far provided no response, ignoring all these voices.
