ISRAEL FURIOUS DUE TO CNN’S REPORT INDICATING THAT EGYPT FOOLED THEM.
Based on CNN report, Egyptian intelligence altered the terms of a ceasefire proposal initially agreed upon by Israel, which disrupted a potential deal that could have led to the release of Israeli hostages and Palestinian prisoners, as well as a temporary halt to the Gaza conflict. The ceasefire agreement announced by Hamas on May 6 was not what the US and Qatar believed was submitted for final review. The changes, undisclosed until now, caused significant anger among officials from the US, Qatar, and Israel, stalling ceasefire talks.
CIA Director Bill Burns, who was in the region, was reportedly furious and felt misled. The changes were made by Ahmed Abdel Khalek, a senior Egyptian intelligence official, who told different versions to Israel and Hamas, adding more of Hamas' demands into the framework without informing the other mediators or Israel. This led to confusion, with Hamas expecting an imminent deal, while the actual terms were not what Israel had agreed to.
Negotiations have since stalled, and efforts to salvage the proposal are ongoing. Egyptian freelancing of the deal’s terms has led to a complicated diplomatic situation, with questions about Egypt's motives and its role in future ceasefire talks. Despite the setbacks, mediators continue to seek a resolution, although a re-launch of negotiations does not appear imminent.
