JUST IN:
Testimony from an Ex-Israeli ‘hostage’ in Gaza who was released for free by Hamas because she was sick despite Israel refusing to take them back.
Yocheved Lifshitz, one of the first hostages released. Her husband, Oded Lifshitz , who is on the list of ‘hostages’, his body will be returned tomorrow.
“On the 17th day of my captivity, I was sick—I suffered from diarrhea and vomiting, I didn’t eat or drink. There was a doctor there who gave me medication, but it didn’t help. Hamas wanted to release me and Nurit Cooper from Nir Oz, who was with me. Her shoulder was broken.
In Israel, they didn’t want to take us—the government was afraid they would have to give up too much in exchange. Then Hamas said, ‘If you don’t want to accept them, we’ll leave them at the border fence. If you want, take them—if you don’t, don’t.’ Israel took us for free—without any exchange.
If the deal is carried out, I think they should be received quietly. Let the closest family members come, and only them—there shouldn’t be a massive crowd. They will need care—they need to be accompanied, as do the families. They should have a shared framework—psychological and medical support. We don’t know what condition they will be in.
I hope Oded returns. I don’t know in what state he will return, or what kind of person he will be. His whole world was turned upside down on October 7 and by everything he has endured since. If he is alive, I don’t know how he will react. A man who fought all his life for peace and human rights received the hardest blow, precisely from them—our neighbors in Gaza. He would take them every week to hospitals in Israel.
I don’t know if he’s alive or dead—all I know is that he’s on the list. How will I receive him? What condition will he be in? I don’t know. I’m sure that if he’s alive and okay, he’s saying, ‘I’m last in line. First release the young people—their whole lives are ahead of them. After them, release me.’”
