In 1978, when the Free Trade Zones were opened to the west, this city was a fishing village, with a population of ~30,000 people.
By 2015, the population had exploded to 12 million and today, it’s nearly 20 million. The same image could be shown for DOZENS of Chinese cities that have been built using the Dollars from our imbalanced trade.
THIS, ladies and gentlemen, is the ONLY image we should think of when you think about trade and tariffs.
THIS image is what Trump is trying to reverse.
Think about it this way, trade is a zero-sum game. Over the last 40 years, for every factory, every office building and every storefront that has shuttered in our American Cities, one has been built in China to replace it. Every dollar not spend in America on manufacturing is going to construct one of the skyscrapers you see below.
The result is that China has many cities that no one has ever heard of that have been built using OUR MONEY.
As YOUR jobs have been lost, as YOUR income has stagnated, as YOUR town has crumbled, YOUR Dollars have built THIS CITY.
