DOGE Uncovers $4.7 Trillion in Untraceable Treasury Payments, Prompting Oversight Reform
The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) revealed Monday that approximately $4.7 trillion in Treasury Department payments lacked a critical tracking code, making them nearly impossible to trace.
The missing Treasury Account Symbol (TAS) links payments to budget line items, but it was previously an optional field, DOGE stated in a post on X. In response, the agency has now made TAS mandatory to improve financial oversight.
"As of Saturday, this is now a required field, increasing insight into where money is actually going," DOGE announced, thanking the Treasury Department for implementing the change.
Elon Musk, who leads the government efficiency initiative, called it a "major improvement in Treasury payment integrity," crediting collaboration between DOGE, Treasury, and the Federal Reserve.
DOGE, embedded in Treasury since President Trump's inauguration, continues efforts to curb waste, including a proposal to eliminate paper checks, which it says could save taxpayers $750 million annually.
