It was popularized in 1939 by the America First Committee, which was formed by patriots who opposed US involvement in WWII. It was arguably the largest bipartisan anti war movement in history, with speeches filling Madison Sq. Garden.
They were smeared as antisemites and isolationism was made out to be a dirty word so that it would never happen again.
The term reemerged thanks to the one and only Patrick Buchanan. I don't need to explain his views on Israeli influence to any of you, I'm sure.
It is not some boomer slogan about establishment conservatism.
It means America first, last, and only...
and it has always been about foreign wars.
